Overview & Highlights

Nestled in the bustling Lot 18, Damai Plaza of Kota Kinabalu, Hainan Chicken Rice Andrew Wong is a beloved gem for lovers of authentic Chinese cuisine, particularly those craving the timeless classic—Hainanese chicken rice. This unpretentious spot, often described as a "hole in the wall," draws steady crowds from the moment it opens its doors shortly after 10am, with the day's offerings frequently selling out well before mid-afternoon. Such demand is a true testament to the quality and flavor that keeps locals and visitors coming back.

The spotlight here is undoubtedly on their Hainan chicken rice, expertly crafted to deliver a harmonious dance of textures and tastes. Diners can choose between silky smooth, delicately steamed free-range corn-fed chicken—known for its richer, fuller flavor—or a tender farm chicken alternative. While the free-range chicken carries a slightly firmer texture, this just enhances its natural character, offering an authentic bite that’s both satisfying and wholesome.

Beyond the chicken itself, the rice is a fragrant, essential partner to the dish, absorbing subtle hints of chicken essence and rendered with a pleasingly fluffy yet flavorful consistency. The meal is completed with an array of thoughtfully prepared condiments—fiery chili sauce, pungent crushed garlic dips, and a ginger blend—that elevate every mouthful, providing just the right kick to tantalize the palate without overwhelming.

For those seeking a comforting side, the flavorful bowl of soup infused with 老黄瓜 (old cucumber) offers a soothing counterpoint, rounding out the meal with gentle, aromatic undertones. Portions are well balanced, making it an ideal spot for a satisfying lunch without the heaviness.

While the seating area is modest and reflects the humble origins of a food stall, the bustling, no-frills atmosphere only adds to the authentic local experience. Service aligns with this setting—efficient and straightforward—complementing the focus on food quality rather than frills. It's clear that at Andrew Wong's, it's all about the star attraction: expertly prepared chicken rice that stands up to its reputation.

A word of advice for enthusiasts: arrive early, especially if you have a preference for thigh or drumstick portions, as these favorites commonly disappear quickly. Despite some comments about pricing being on the higher side—particularly for the free-range option—the consensus affirms the value for quality and taste, making it a worthy indulgence for discerning palates.

Whether you’re a dedicated Hainanese chicken rice aficionado or a curious traveler in Kota Kinabalu longing for a truly memorable local bite, Hainan Chicken Rice Andrew Wong promises a flavorful journey steeped in tradition, quality ingredients, and genuine local charm.

Very popular local chicken rice place. Just a hole in the wall type place but the crowds stream in the moment they open. Operating hours are supposed to be 10.30am till 2pm. In actuality, opens just after 10am and can be sold out by 12+/1pm. Free range corn fed chicken that I had was a little tough (as is expected from free range chooks) but silky smooth and full flavoured. The offal was nothing to shout about but reasonably satisfying. The bowl of soup was delicious. Had bits of lotus root and peanuts. Chili sauce and crushed garlic dips were delicious.

The food here is definitely top-notch. The chicken is silky and velvety smooth, with a firm, fresh texture. Both the chicken and rice are full of flavour, and the condiments pair well to round out the meal. The portion is just right, and the price is reasonable for the quality and size. This is one of my go-to spots for chicken rice in KK. Service is normal—as expected from a stall and not a full-service restaurant. Don’t expect five-star service or a red carpet; it’s more of a help-yourself, feel-at-home kind of place. At times, service may take a bit longer than usual, but that’s normal for a popular eatery.

Finally a decent chicken rice at KK. Ordered the free range chicken because only it is available in half chicken. Chicken is fresh, rice is OK fragrant, condiments are not "kick". But, wow, the price is shocking.

Decent Hainan steam free range chicken which silky smooth and full flavoured. The bowl of soup was delicious with 老黄瓜. Chili sauce and crushed garlic dips were delicious. Would recommend to people who travel to KK and craving for chicken rice.

One of the best chicken rice dishes in town. Here you can opt for either free-range or farm chicken. And you can go for the classic plain white rice or the fragrant yellow rice. The chicken here is consistently tender and juicy with the perfect combination with their special blend of Garlic-ginger and chili . If you're a fan of thigh and drumstick portions, make sure to arrive early as they tend to disappear quickly due to high demand. The only downside is the limited seating area, so be prepared for that. On a humorous note, if you're lucky enough, you might even witness the boss's "altitude problem" – a funny quirk that adds character to the experience.

Seriously delicious Hainan Chicken Rice Choose from steam free range chicken or steam farm chicken. Price is average for the steam farm chicken rice set, and a bit pricier for the steam free range chicken rice set. Best eaten with the chilies & ginger. However, seating area a quiet limited.
